The Adršpach Rocks: A Spectacular Nature Reserve in the Czech Republic

The Adršpach Rock City is the most famous rock city in the Czech Republic. It is a fascinating nature reserve known for its massive sandstone formations. With its fairytale-like rocks and quirky names like the “Sugar Loaf” and the “Lovers,” it draws many visitors every year.

Located in Bohemia and known locally as Adršpašsko-Teplické skály, it is arguably the most spectacular natural landscape in the region. Many people travel to these extraordinary rocks in the Broumov Highlands. With its unique beauty, it is part of one of the largest continuous rock massifs in Central Europe. It is not the absolute height of these rocks, but the magical shapes of the stone blocks that make this landscape so charming. The stones form a city of rocks. We traveled here from our home mountains in the Karwendel to see these impressive formations. Although we have seen many extraordinary landscapes, the Adršpach Rock City particularly inspired us. We visited the rock city in the Czech Republic with children. You can read about our experiences from this spectacular family vacation here to get an impression of these forces of nature.

A Mystic Sandstone Labyrinth and Fantastic Formations

The Adršpach-Teplice Rock City is characterized by its variety of fantastic shapes and original names. It is a mystical labyrinth of rocks that form special figures with their own names. When you hike through the sandstone rock labyrinth, you will be thrilled by the bizarre shapes of the rock needles, steep walls, caves, and imposing formations. From the majestic Rock Crown to the striking Sugar Loaf and romantic formations like the Lovers, there is a wealth of impressive sights to discover. The rock figures bear imaginative names that stimulate the imagination and convey a touch of fairytales and legends.

History and Geology of the Rock Formations

The origin of the Adršpach Rock City dates back to the Cretaceous period, when a uniform sandstone plate formed over older rock layers. Over time, erosion caused by water, sun, frost, and wind gradually fragmented the rocks, creating a unique landscape with crevices, gorges, and deep hollows. A highlight of the natural experience is the Great Adršpach Waterfall, which plunges majestically into a gorge surrounded by breathtaking scenery. The rock city is not only a paradise for nature lovers but also for climbers and mountaineers. The rocks offer many climbing routes that have been developed since the 1920s. Today, there are about 2,000 climbed towers and rocks. The history of the rock city dates back to the 13th century when castles like Střmen and Adersbach were built. Many formations are anchored in folk culture. Famous figures like Goethe visited in 1790, and the area has served as a backdrop for films and music videos.

Discover the Rock Canyons and Hiking Trails

The most photographed spot in the Adršpach Rock City is the Gothic Gate. You can discover the rock canyons of the Adršpach Rock City on various paths. The Adršpach Rock Lake is located right at the entrance to the rock labyrinth. The Adršpach Brook flows through the city, though it carries little water in summer. For visitors, there are well-marked hiking trails and circular tours to explore the labyrinth. The rock city retains its magic in all seasons and is very popular. It is advisable to plan your visit on a weekday to avoid crowds and enjoy the beauty in peace. The circular trails lead through narrow crevices, over mystical bridges and stairs, past the most striking formations, and offer breathtaking viewpoints.

The Adršpach Loop and the Gothic Gate

There are two main sightseeing routes: the Teplice Loop and the Adršpach Loop, connected by the Wolf Gorge. The Adršpach Loop follows the green trail markers and offers a beautiful view of the flooded quarry, the so-called Sand Pit (Pískovna). Along this route, you can admire formations like Rübezahl’s Chair, Grandmother’s Armchair, and the Sugar Loaf. You will also walk through the Rock Suburb with formations like the Glove and the Twins in Bed. The path continues to the Gothic Gate and Elephant Square before reaching the waterfalls. While not as water-rich as those in the Alps, they are worth seeing due to the surrounding high gorges. A highlight for many is a romantic ferry boat ride across the lake. We continued to the Teplice Rock City, accessible behind the boat exit towards the Wolf Gorge. Alternatively, you can visit the former rock castle for a magnificent view. Further on, you’ll see the Crocodile and the Turtle before reaching the viewpoint of the Mayor and Mayoress. Through the narrow Mouse Hole, you reach Rübezahl’s Piano and end the tour with the Rock Echo. The route is lined with 100-meter-high rock walls and huge boulders. You should be sure-footed and able to climb stairs.

ADRŠPACH ROCKS LAKE
Located between the entrance and the actual rock city, the Adršpach Rock Lake is one of the most breathtaking spots. Like something out of a fairytale, this lake charms visitors with its clear, turquoise-blue water and majestic rock walls. The glittering surface reflects the steep walls, creating an enchanting play of light. A short circular path leads around the lake.

GOTHIC GATE
The Gothic Gate is the landmark of the Adršpach Rock City, built in 1839 in Neo-Gothic style. This mighty stone portal originally marked the official entrance. Built into a narrow rock alley, it is now a mystical threshold leading from the outer rock suburb into the deep gorges and the Long Corridor. The gate embodies 19th-century romantic aesthetics and is an essential photo spot.

The Teplice Rock City borders Adršpach directly, separated only by the Wolf Gorge. Often referred to together as the Adršpach-Teplice Rocks, they are two separate areas. The Teplice Rocks (Teplické skály) are characterized by continuous rock walls exceeding 70 meters, slim towers, and wild nature. On the 6-kilometer circular trail, you pass rocks with curious names like the Hatchet or the Hand with Ice Cream. We found the Teplice Rock City even more impressive because it is closer to nature and has fewer visitors, making it a perfect destination for hikers.
